Seed Sowing

In order to make the seed sowing process as easy and hassle free as possible, we recommend that gardeners make use of our excellent range of Burgon & Ball seed sowing accessories. We can also recommend the following seed sowing tips:

1. Before sowing seeds, do the necessary groundwork. Take time to prepare the planting area by removing all weeds, rocks, sticks and large clumps of dirt from the soil. Use a garden fork to loosen the soil, and then rake it into an even, level surface.
2. Follow the instructions on your seed packet to achieve the correct planting depth and spacing. Generally speaking, seeds should be planted three times as deep as the diameter of the seed variety.
3. Ensure that the soil remains evenly moist. If the soil dries out, it will restrict the seeds’ germination.
4. Be careful when watering your newly sown seeds. A strong blast of water from a hose will either wash your seeds out of the soil bed, or mess up their spacing. If using a watering can, use a “rose” fitting to obtain a gentle flow of water on your seeds.
5. Use Burgon & Ball Large Wooden Labels to mark the place where you have planted your seeds. This prevents you from mistaking the baby plants for weeds, and accidentally pulling them up. Knowing the exact location of your seeds also allows you to keep an eye on how their growth is progressing.
